Mostly, though, I wanted to share an experience of which your remark reminded me... My seventh-grade social studies class was dysfunctional beyond description ("Aristotle posited that the world was round because he saw pictures from outer space" was one perfectly serious suggestion I remember hearing), so the teacher suggested that I might want to bring a book to read in class, which I proceeded to do after that.
