When I Grow Up
Feb. 27th, 2004 04:40 pmI've decided what I want to do when I grow up. When I get out of school, enter the real world, get a life, and all that.
I want to be a bard!
There are difficulties, to be sure. The profession no longer exists in any substantial way in the modern world. No career requires or uses that nice blend of memorization, recitation, and satiric taste in the way that barding does. No artist shows quite that delicate touch at creative reinventing... except perhaps Weird Al Yankovic; parody is one of the finer aspects of the true bard's task.
But I have the skills: a decent singing voice, competent instrumental skills, a great memory for detail, a knack for double entendre, and an ability to twist anything to the meaning desired. And a love for story of all kinds and in all forms.
I hereby call for a reinstitution of the original fourth estate. Bring back the bards! Bring them today!!!
