Slacktivist has a great post on the true nature of literacy and being educated. It's not merely being able to read, but also being able to discern. I have to say, though, when I got to the end, all I could think was, "Man, that evil Dickens book I had to read for class was good for something. I actually know who Gradgrind is. Does that mean I have to read more of the stuff I've assiduously avoided?"

At least when I had it in my Survey of British Lit class, the instructor had as little liking for it as we did. Standard text thing. And we got to do Jane Austen, which made it all better.
